Der Aufseßplatz in Nürnberg: Was passiert auf dem Schocken Areal?

Aufseßplatz is the heart of Nuremberg's Südstadt district. Over a hundred years ago, the city's first department store, the "Schocken," opened here. After around 85 years and several changes of ownership, the department store finally closed in 2012. The building has since been demolished. While there are plans for a new building, not much has happened so far. Around 88,000 people live in Nuremberg's Südstadt district. Ümit Sormaz also lived there for a long time. He likes the district, but he, too, is bothered by the construction site at Aufseßplatz. After a private Dutch company bought the building in 2019, many residents were initially optimistic. The old building was demolished, and a new property with retail space, apartments, and a daycare center was to be built by 2024. But to date, there has been no sign of it. The private developer has not commented on the matter, despite repeated inquiries. The City of Nuremberg is not responsible for the site. The city expects construction to begin in spring 2025 – by which time the completion can also be predicted. However, there is no guarantee that excavators will be working in the southern part of the city in a few weeks. Ümit Sormaz intends to continue to support the development of Aufseßplatz in the future. Many people cannot imagine moving away from the southern part of the city – despite the construction site.
