Old name of Bahawalnagar was Rojhanwali. It was named Bahawalnagar in 1901 after Nawab Bahawal Khan Abbasi (V) the Nawab of the Bahawalpur state comprising the present districts of Bahawalpur, Bahawalnagar and Rahim Yar Khan. This is 230km west of Lahore and about 130km east of Bahwalpur. River Sutluj passes on the northern side at a distance of about 8km.
