India - Ingall Collection, Darjeeling Part 7, Kurseong - Sonada, 2005

Tony Ingall Collection - Dajeeling Himalayan Railway Part 3 A ride on the Darjeeling Railway, or Toy Train as it's called locally, is really a must for every steam railway enthusiast. It winds its way from the bustling towns of Jalpaiguri and Siliguri into the foothills of the Himalayan mountain range. The steep climb is achieved a mix of small diesels and the wonderful B Class steam pannier tanks, which are well over 100 years old. In this Part 7, the train continues the climb from Kurseong to Sonada, a ridiculously congested town as two steam hauled trains pass each other along a main street already congested by too much road traffic and pedestrians busy shopping. The local police beat a passing driver with a stick, I think, out of sheer frustration at the level of congestion. This appears to be the normal way of dealing with any problem. This was recorded by my good friend, Tony Ingall, while I was recording my own footage alongside him. I regret to admit that the back of my head features several times in Tony's recordings. I apologise to him for that right now!
