Mexicana AIrlines Flight 940 left Mexico City at 8:50am on March 31st 1986 bound for Los Angeles. The plane suffered an explosion during the later phase of its ascent to crusing altitude. The explosion from below destroyed the flight control hydraulics and fuel feeding lines resulting in an uncontrollable inflight fire that tore the plane apart. The accident claimed the lives of all 167 people on board becoming the worst air disaster in Mexico's history.
