Welcome back to my Garden Tour series. Throughout the winter I like to visit gardens that really make you stop and think, and today I’m at the beautiful West Dean Gardens looking at something rather special. This is the old Sunken Garden, now completely transformed into a sand garden. It is one of the most exciting and thoughtful pieces of planting I’ve seen in a long time. Built on a sand base, planted with carefully chosen drought tolerant plants, and designed so it doesn’t need watering, this garden shows us how we can garden beautifully while responding to changing weather and climate. I talk to Head Gardener Tom about how this garden was created, why sand was used, how the plants cope with hot summers and wet winters, and what this kind of planting means for the future of gardening. We also explore how traditional techniques like sand beds are being reimagined, and why choosing the right plants is far more important than feeding and watering endlessly. This is a garden full of movement, colour, texture and structure, and one that proves dry gardens don’t have to be dull or limited. Whether you have a large garden, a narrow border, or even a small space to experiment with, there is so much inspiration here to take home. I hope you enjoy walking through this remarkable garden with me. How To Create A Beautiful, Resilient Sand Garden | Tour + Interview w/ Head Gardener, Tom Brown
