In this episode, I reviewed several new releases for September 2022, including Guerlain Oud Khol (Thierry Wasser), Guerlain Oud Nude (Delphine Jelk), Guerlain Cherry Oud (Delphine Jelk), Quartana Ierofante (Luca Maffei) and Francesca Bianchi Unspoken Musk (Francesca Bianchi). Introduction 0:00 Guerlain Cherry Oud 2:51 Guerlain Oud Nude 8:05 Guerlain Oud Khol 12:05 Quartana Ierofante 24:39 Francesca Bianchi Unspoken Musk 32:53 — Here’s the blotter update… I must confess that, after the excitement of its opening, Unspoken Musk becomes somewhat less compelling, allowing the intriguing animalic blends to be pushed aside by sticky sweetness. It’s the purring quality with which this scent begins that makes it striking, so it’s a shame that the final stages do away with this element to some extent. Of the Guerlains, I remain most interested by Oud Nude. Cherry Oud does entirely what you’d expect it to do: push pseudo-flirtatious fruit notes next to heated woods. Oud Khol is perhaps a touch too crass (have the aldehydes been overplayed?) although I shall reserve final judgement for the moment. But Nude weaves the vanilla and the woods together with surprising finesse. It’s not quite L’Heure Bleue In The Desert, but it’s heading in that direction. Ierofante is the one to seek out from this selection: otherworldly, elusive and haunting, combining unashamedly synthetic notes with a gentle naturalness.
