O Teatro Experimental do Negro – Ocupação Abdias Nascimento (2016)

Actress Ruth de Souza talks about her entry into the Teatro Experimental do Negro (TEN), where she stayed for five years and where she performed her first play, O Imperador Jones, with a text by Eugene O'Neill and directed by Abdias Nascimento. Actor Haroldo Costa says that it was through his volunteer work as a teacher in TEN's literacy courses that he began his career in theater, when he had to replace one of the actors in a play. Actress Léa Garcia talks about the unusual way she entered TEN and the difficulties she still faces today. Carmem Luz, choreographer, director and filmmaker, talks about Abdias' generosity and his teachings on racial awareness. Actor, director, playwright and founder of the Companhia Teatral Abdias Nascimento, Ângelo Flávio, denounces the absence of the story of Abdias and TEN in theater courses and schools. Testimonies recorded for the Ocupação Abdias Nascimento in August and September 2016, in Salvador/BA and Rio de Janeiro/RJ. The exhibition will be on display from November 17, 2016 to January 15, 2017, at Itaú Cultural, in São Paulo/SP.
