Very Bunny
Very Bunny, From the Kathy Turner Collection, With Kathy Turner and Michael Canadas. Master doll coiffeur Michael Canadas is green with envy as he joins esteemed doll expert Kathy Turner to explore and discuss her incredible and extensive collection of early bun chinas. The dolls are time capsules of historic hairstyles and Michael discusses how many of the styles could not be achieved with clean hair, hair was washed less frequently and set with sugar water or bear grease. Kathy discusses the dolls not made in Germany including several Rörstrand chinas made in Sweden, a rare pierced ear lady from France, a doll attributed to Royal Copenhagen (circa 1840’s-1850’s), a KMP with an applied bun, a Bing & Grondahl, and a Kloster Veilsdorf. We explore dolls with the “Queen Victoria” hairstyle: center parted with braids looped around exposed ears. The dolls were not typically made to depict the Queen herself but came to be known as such due to the hairstyle that she popularized. Dolls with molded combs bands and pins embellished with gilt or even painted to represent tortoiseshell are explored. Guess which doll is Michael’s favorite!
