Warum musste der Palast der Republik wirklich weg?

The Palace of the Republic opened 49 years ago. This People's and Cultural Palace, built in the tradition of the socialist workers' movement, was only accessible for 14 years. On September 19, 1990, it was closed by the GDR government. One day later, the GDR's People's Chamber and the Bundestag in Bonn voted in favor of the Unification Treaty of August 31. The end of the Palace coincided with the liquidation of the GDR and also marked the birth of the Berlin Republic. And because the new bourgeois republic did not want to be reminded of its birth or historical socialism, the popular People's House had to be demolished against the will of the majority of the population. We had the opportunity to speak with Rudolf Denner (Friends of the Palace of the Republic) and Joachim Thiele about their experiences in the Palace, the hatred of West German politicians towards the GDR, as well as the period after its demolition, the reconstruction of the Berlin Palace, and the construction of the Humboldt Forum.
