In today’s video, I’m reacting to a rare historical recording of a man born in 1846, sharing his firsthand memories of growing up in Virginia, witnessing the events leading up to the American Civil War, and eventually fighting as a teenager. He talks about remembering the election of Abraham Lincoln, hearing about John Brown, watching classmates leave school to join the war, and later serving in a cavalry unit during major moments of the conflict. Hearing someone describe these events in their own voice, nearly a century later, is honestly surreal. What stood out most to me was how young he was — only 16 and a half years old — and how he openly admits that at the time, he didn’t fully understand what he was fighting for. He reflects on slavery, states’ rights, and how his views changed over time, which made this both fascinating and heavy to listen to. Because of the accent and old audio, I had to really focus to follow his words — but that made the experience even more powerful.
