O QUE É RACISMO ESTRUTURAL, AFINAL?

Structural racism is not simply an act of discrimination. It represents a historical process in which conditions of disadvantage and privilege for certain ethnic-racial groups are reproduced in the political, economic, cultural spheres, and in everyday relationships. Our guest, Rosane Borges, journalist and professor, explains: “We tend to reduce it to situations of prejudice and discrimination because it manifests itself in those situations, but it is a system of power, a system that hierarchizes humanities, taking race as a criterion.” And she reinforces: “Racism in Brazil is not episodic, it is not phenomenal. When we attribute this individualizing character to racism, we fail to point out its structures.” Our guest, Marilea de Almeida, psychoanalyst and member of the Black Historians Network, recalls that for a long time, the great narrative of Brazil was the myth of racial democracy: “The idea that racial relations in Brazil did not occur in a violent or exclusionary way is obviously an ideology that falsifies reality.” Rosane emphasizes, “Brazil is a country shaped by racism because it was a country that enslaved people for over 300 years. The abolition of slavery was not accompanied by an abolition of mentalities; you abolished the relationships, but the bond of slavery remained the same.” The fight against structural racism is not a struggle that began today, nor will it end tomorrow, but through education, information, recognition, and combat, we will change the structures that no longer serve us. Racism. Either you fight it, or you are part of it.
