Why Moses and Elijah Appeared With Jesus — The Hidden Meaning

Two men appear on a mountain with Jesus. The text gives their names. Most readers treat them as two important Old Testament figures who showed up for a significant moment. That is not wrong. But Luke records something the other gospel writers do not — and the word he uses changes everything about why those two men are there. Luke 9:31. They spoke about his departure, which he was about to bring to fulfillment at Jerusalem. The Greek word Luke uses for departure is exodon. Exodus. Not departure. Not death-as-euphemism. The specific word for the Exodus event — the rescue through water, the deliverance from slavery, the passage toward the promised land. Moses is on the mountain. And he is being told about the Exodus that his Exodus was always pointing toward.
