American psychologist Abraham Maslow. A leading figure in humanistic psychology, a movement considered a third force that focuses on the health aspects of human beings. Maslow's hierarchy of needs (or need hierarchy) is well-known. It's something that nursing and psychology students need to memorize. There are five needs: physiological needs, safety needs, love and belonging needs, esteem and recognition needs, and self-actualization needs. Only once lower-level needs are met can one move on to the next level of desire. Lower-level needs are related to "deficiency motivation," and once these are met, higher-level needs are related to "growth motivation." The first level is physiological needs, which are necessary for survival, such as eating and sleeping. The second level is safety needs, which seek to avoid life-threatening situations. These are material needs. The third level is love and belonging needs (affiliation needs). Above this level are psychological needs, which involve belonging to groups such as family and friends and finding companionship. These are social needs. These are needs that we seek from those around us and are related to deficiency motivation. The fourth level is esteem needs (recognition needs), the desire to feel valued. This stage contains two elements. After seeking recognition and respect from others (the "desire for recognition and respect"), one arrives at the "desire for self-recognition and self-esteem." From the fourth stage onwards, one becomes concerned with oneself and spiritual fulfillment. The final stage, stage five, is the desire for self-actualization. This is the ultimate motivation for growth. It involves growing spiritually and realizing one's own creative self in accordance with one's abilities. Some believe that beyond this there is also a "desire for self-transcendence," which seeks to transcend the boundaries of the self and seek a mystical or social sense of mission.
