DEAL CASTLE | An Iconic Tudor COASTAL FORT Built to Prevent INVASION from the Holy Roman Empire

Deal Castle, located in the coastal town of Deal in Kent, England, is one of the finest examples of Tudor military architecture. Built in 1540 by order of King Henry VIII, the castle was part of a network of coastal defenses known as the Device Forts, constructed to protect England from the threat of invasion by France and the Holy Roman Empire. Designed in the shape of a Tudor rose, Deal Castle features a central keep surrounded by six circular bastions, creating an innovative and highly effective artillery platform. The castle’s design allowed it to mount heavy cannons on multiple levels, providing overlapping fields of fire to guard against enemy ships approaching the strategic Strait of Dover. While Deal Castle never saw significant military action, it remained an active garrison into the 19th century and served as a coastal defense installation during the Napoleonic Wars and World War II.
