In 1931, a shorter variant of this pistol was designed to meet the needs of the police, among other things. This resulted in the PPK, which stands for Polizeipistole Kriminal (Kriminal Police Pistol), and the K in PPK is not the K in Kurtz. The barrel and frame are shorter. The weapon is 15.4 cm long with an 8 cm barrel. It was a success, and the weapon was available in 9mm short, 7.65 Browning, and 22 long rifle calibers. A virtuous circle ensued for Walther, as the weapon was so popular that author Ian Flemming made it the weapon of the famous spy 007, further boosting the small German pistol's popularity.
