The town of Healesville with its ‘suburbs’, Badger Creek, Chum Creek and Mount Toolebewong, at the foot of Australia’s Great Dividing Range, has an interesting but complex history. Travellers seeking a fortune on the goldfields, the Aboriginal settlement of Coranderrk, timber milling, agriculture, water supply to Melbourne, railway, tourism and the magnificent fauna sanctuary, have all shaped the town’s heritage. Today, visitors are fortunate in that there are still many connections to the past in historic buildings, memorials and working attractions such as the tourist rail and wildlife sanctuary.
