Do the Shia Believe in Masjid al-Aqsa?

What is the status of Masjid al-Aqṣā in Shīʿī Islam? Do Shīʿī ḥadīths affirm its sanctity, and how have Shīʿī scholars and exegetes understood the Qurʾānic references to it? What should be made of the controversial reports that appear to identify al-Masjid al-Aqṣā with a location other than Jerusalem? In this video, I present a comprehensive study of Masjid al-Aqṣā in Twelver Shīʿī thought, examining the relevant narrations, the opinions of major Shīʿī scholars, and the interpretations found in classical and contemporary Shīʿī tafsīr works. Particular attention is given to the disputed reports that have generated confusion and debate regarding the identity of al-Masjid al-Aqṣā. The discussion explores the authenticity, context, and meaning of these narrations, how leading Shīʿī authorities have approached them, and whether they challenge or affirm the traditional understanding of Masjid al-Aqṣā in Jerusalem. I also examine the holiness, virtues, and religious significance of Masjid al-Aqṣā within the Shīʿī tradition and its place in Shīʿī devotional and theological literature. This is, to my knowledge, the most comprehensive treatment of this subject currently available in the English language, bringing together primary Shīʿī sources, scholarly analysis, and Qurʾānic exegesis to provide a detailed and balanced examination of this important issue.
