Step-by-step instructions: Starting leeks indoors is done in a cool room on a windowsill. In April, the leek plants are placed outside during the day to harden them off for outdoor conditions. The garden soil is also prepared in spring. The ground cover is mowed and tilled in, and homemade compost is added. For planting out, I create a deep row so that the leeks can be continuously mounded with soil throughout the year. Leek care involves removing weeds, mulching, and mounding soil around the base. The frost resistance of leek plants is very impressive. They can easily withstand nights as low as -15°C (5°F). This means that even in February, when there's snow, you can harvest fresh vegetables from your own garden. Growing your own leeks is therefore very well suited for beginners and novice gardeners.
