Paribhāṣā Ep. 3 - Exploring the mystique of Svarajati-s with Vidushi Smt. Neela Ramgopal
Nādabhṛṅga takes great pleasure in bringing you the next installment in our specially curated series titled "Paribhāṣā" - a series of in-depth conversations around, and presentations about music, musicians, musical styles and musical compositions with various scholars and practitioners of the art form. In episode 3 of this series, we explore the mystique of Svarajati-s with Sangita Kala Acharya Vidushi Smt. Neela Ramgopal. Svarajati-s are generally considered to be a part of the formational structural exercises taught to students of South Indian Classical Music. On the concert level, apart from the 3 svarajati-s of Śrī Śyāma Śāstri, not many are presented. Smt. Neela Ramgopal delves into several beautiful svarajati-s composed by different composers over the centuries, demonstrating how these compositions are wonderful amalgamations of rāga and sāhitya bhāva. She has also spoken about the historical evolution of the compositional form of svarajati, as well as touched upon various allied compositional forms like jatisvara-s, gīta-s, etc. We are eternally grateful to Smt. Neela Ramgopal for preparing the subject matter for this episode and training her students with such enthusiasm and energy in a very short time. Inspite of her age, she was most enthusiastic to record this episode for us. We also wish to thank her for all the help she patiently extended to us, during the editing of this episode. We also wish to thank Smt. Neela Ramgopal's disciples for admirably supporting her in this mammoth task. In order to facilitate easy and smooth communication of the musical concepts and ideas presented here, we requested Smt. Neela Ramgopal to speak in Tamil. Smt.
