Although I started playing percussion very early, it was only after I turned 30 that I began to learn to play properly with the correct techniques, because I was playing incorrectly and barely knew how. This was only possible because I studied for three years at one of the largest Percussion Schools (Pracatum), founded here in Salvador, Bahia, in the Candeal neighborhood, by the great musician and percussionist Carlinhos Brown. At this school, I had the chance to meet renowned musicians and learn from them. With the teachings during this period, I was able to correct several mistakes I made and also learn the techniques and tips of the best percussionists in Bahia. In case you didn't know, great percussionists like Cara de Cobra, Gustavo Di Dalva, Elber Mário, among other big names in Bahian percussion, also went through this same school I'm referring to, which I attended and continue to attend. I spent a long time thinking that only those born with a gift could learn to play a musical instrument. However, I realized I was completely wrong after starting to teach pandeiro (Brazilian tambourine) to various students of different ages, including students who had never even held a pandeiro in their lives. I found that after six months of classes, with my first group of students of different ages, everyone managed to acquire the technique and play more than ten rhythms on the pandeiro by the end of the course. Of course, some acquired the technique faster and others took a little longer. However, by the end of the course, everyone was already playing. And, incredibly, the two students who adapted the fastest were over 70 years old each.
