It has been revealed that nearly four out of every ten successful candidates in the open competitive recruitment exam for police constables held in the first half of this year were women. The National Police Agency announced that out of the 2,941 final successful candidates for the open recruitment of police constables in the first half of 2026, 1,112 were women, accounting for 37.8% of the total. Men numbered 1,829, making up 62.2%. The police explained that out of a total of 29,972 applicants, men accounted for 62.9% and women 37.1%, showing no significant difference from the gender ratio of the final successful candidates. This exam fully implemented a "gender-integrated selection method" for the first time in the history of open recruitment for police constables, recruiting both genders simultaneously without separating them. Previously, open recruitment for police constables maintained separate quotas for men and women, with the selection ratio for women typically hovering around 20%. However, as a result of this year's first integrated selection, the proportion of successful female candidates has nearly doubled compared to previous levels. Acting Commissioner General Yoo Jae-sung of the National Police Agency explained the cause of this phenomenon during a regular press briefing today (the 22nd), stating, "There was an aspect where competition was fiercer because the number of women recruited was limited." In fact, during the past three years when recruitment was conducted separately by gender, the competition rate for women was up to 2.5 times higher than that for men. Regarding the outlook for an increase in female police officers, Acting Commissioner Yoo noted, "The proportion of women among the total police force is 16.7%," adding, "It will rise slightly in the future." The pass rate for the rotational physical fitness test, which had garnered significant attention, was 88.6% for men and 42.5% for women, resulting in an overall pass rate of 63.9%. Regarding concerns that the increase in successful female recruits might limit the ability to use physical force in the field, such as subduing criminals, the National Police Agency stated, "We will continuously monitor the situation to ensure there are no public concerns," while also clarifying, "If such concerns materialize or serious problems arise, we will also closely review institutional improvements."
