A masterpiece from Studio Ghibli that remains a landmark in the history of Japanese animated films: Spirited Away. Even more than 20 years after its release, it remains a great work that reigns as one of the top 3 highest-grossing films of all time. This film was released in 2001. I was in the third grade of elementary school. I was so impressed in the theater that I begged my parents to buy me the DVD, and I remember watching it dozens of times on TV, including the bonus features. As a child, I enjoyed the animation itself, but now, as an adult, I can appreciate the meticulously crafted story, composition, beautiful colors, and character backgrounds in a different way, feeling the depth of Miyazaki's work. And one of the pillars supporting this film's epic story is its color design. In particular, the primary colors red, blue, and green each have meaning, playing a role beyond mere color, adding depth to the work. This time, we will explore the meanings of these three colors and consider how we should utilize Studio Ghibli's color design in our own color grading.
