How was the St. Petersburg-Moscow Main Line built, and where did the wider Russian gauge come from? The story of the construction of the empire's most important railway. 👉 You are watching the third episode of the documentary series "History Trails," in which we uncover the secrets of Russia's most important line—the St. Petersburg-Moscow Main Line. In the mid-19th century, Russia entered the age of steam and steel. It was then that one of the most important railways in European history was born—the St. Petersburg-Moscow Line, a major investment by Tsar Nicholas I that connected the two capitals of the empire and transformed its economy. This episode of the "History Trails" series tells the story of how Russia's first main line was built between 1842 and 1851. It tells the story of engineers—Russian and American—thousands of workers toiling in extreme conditions, of bridges that became symbols of a new era, and of steam locomotives that gave birth to the Russian railway industry. Why did Russia decide on a wider gauge? What was train travel like in 1851? What challenges did the builders face when they built the tracks through the swamps, rivers, and forests of the northern plain? This is a story full of technical innovations, engineering challenges, and interesting facts—from the first tickets and wagons to the famous wolf attack on the train in winter. The film combines archival footage, reconstructions, and contemporary illustrations to create a story about the railway that changed Russia forever. This film tells the story of the engineers, workers, and technology of the 19th century. The material has no connection to contemporary politics or the current activities of the Russian Federation. 🎞️ This film is part of the "Trails of History" documentary series—about the history of railways, technological transformations, and the era that gave the world a rhythm of steel and smoke. 🎞️ The intro to the series was created using graphics from the book: A.
