Reopening a 120 Year Old Coal Mine in Scranton PA!
Today, after several months of meeting with the Scranton Municipal Recreational Authority, and Pennsylvania Deep Mine Saftey, the UGM team is excited to announce that we have taken the first steps in reopening the 120 year old Historic Brooks Drift Mine, located at Nay Aug Park, to the public! The Brooks Mine was driven in 1902, as part of the Scranton School of Mines, and later was used as a tourist attraction within Nay Aug Park. After being closed for nearly 50 years, the UGM crew had the honor of opening the mine to complete an inspection of the drift. We are now compiling a feasibility study, compliant with state anthracite mining law, to determine the next steps toward rehabilitating the mine. We have significant plans for this special piece of local anthracite history. The entire UGM crew is excited to share the rehabilitation of this exhibition coal mine with you. Also, Scranton taxpayers not to worry, UGM is planning to use private donations, sponsors and grants to fund this passion project.
