Your vocal cords are also used to make the sound. The V and the F sound in Afrikaans do not involve the vocal chords, it is a soft sound. They V and F sound are also pronounced exactly the same in Afrikaans. For example "Vrydag" is spelled with a V and "fantasties" is spelled with an F.
