Lake Powell 2026 - A New Problem is Emerging!
Lake Powell is dropping in 2026 but what’s really happening isn’t as simple as it looks. In this video, we head out into the main canyon, explore newly exposed shoreline, and hike into Warm Creek to rematch a historic 1872 photograph from the Wheeler Survey. By comparing past and present, you can clearly see how the landscape hasn’t changed only the water level has. Right now, Lake Powell is being shaped by two key factors: lower inflow from the Colorado River system and controlled releases from Glen Canyon Dam. As a result, the lake is pulling back into the deeper parts of Glen Canyon, which makes the drop more dramatic along steep canyon walls. This isn’t just “drought” it’s a combination of inflow, outflow, evaporation, and canyon geometry. As levels fall, the water stops spreading out across wide areas and stays confined, making the visible change look faster and more dramatic. This video shows what Lake Powell actually looks like today on the water, in real time. ——— Timestamp: 0:00 Intro 0:15 Main Canyon Conditions 1:05 Why the Lake is Dropping 1:23 Rockfall 3:04 Warm Creek Hike 6:53 1872 vs 2026 Comparison 1 9:45 1872 vs 2026 Comparison 2 11:11 Back to The Boat ⸻ •Current Lake Powell conditions (2026) •Main channel vs shoreline differences •Canyon geometry and why the lake is dropping fast •Rockfall and newly exposed terrain •Warm Creek exploration •Wheeler Survey (1872) photo rematch comparison •Real explanation of inflow vs outflow ⸻ Apr 2026: •Lake Powell is ~23% full •Elevation ~3,528 ft (~172 ft below full pool) •More water is currently leaving the reservoir than entering •2026 inflow forecast is below average ⸻ Lake Powell is often shown in extremes but the reality is more complex.
