Les Romanov | La fin d’un Empire
The Romanovs - The documentary covers the period from the height of the ruling family's power to the legacy of the Romanovs. The Romanovs (2014) Director: Manfred Oldenburg Genre: Documentary, History Language: French Release date: August 5, 2014 (Germany) Synopsis: No other family shaped Russia as much as the Romanovs. For three centuries, this tsarist dynasty ruled the largest country in the world. The Romanovs wielded power through strategic marriage alliances, military force, and dictatorial rigor. Myths and legends surround this ruling dynasty. Great names are associated with it, both revered and feared. Peter the Great modernized the country and made it a major European power. With Catherine the Great, a woman of German origin conquered the Russian tsarist throne. Thanks to her wit and cunning, she became the most powerful woman in the world. Under the reign of Nicholas II, the Tsarist Empire came to an end. In one of the most brutal political assassinations of the 20th century, the last Tsar, his family, and their most loyal servants were killed on the night of July 16-17, 1918. At that time, the Bolsheviks were hunting down members of the Romanov family throughout Russia. Eighteen members of the dynasty and countless people in their circle fell victim. However, some managed to flee the country in time. Today, approximately 60 members of the Tsarist family still live around the world. The filmmakers met with descendants of the Romanovs. The eldest brothers, Prince Nicholas and Prince Dmitri, offer a personal and insightful perspective on their family history. The fate of the Tsar's family, which they actively helped to unravel, still haunts them today. Lead investigator Vladimir Solovyov provides a compelling account of how the "Crime of the Century," with all its brutality and numerous mysteries, was solved. Xenia Sfiris, the great-niece of the last Tsar, shares her experiences of life at the Russian Tsar's court. She recounts firsthand her grandparents' memories of the Tsar's family and of Rasputin, the Tsar's confidant, who was legendary and murdered in her grandparents' house with the help of her grandfather. The film documents the events that unfolded in the Tsarist Empire in a visually spectacular way. It takes the viewer on a journey of discovery through Russian history. In St. Petersburg, the Romanov palaces stand as stone witnesses to the former power and immeasurable wealth, while in Yekaterinburg, the scars of the past, from the massacre of the Tsarist family, are ever-present. Even behind the gates of the Moscow Kremlin, where the story of Romanov rule began, rare images of the center of power have been captured. The documentary covers the period from the reigning family's zenith to the Romanov legacy. Through selected biographies, the film traces the history of Tsarist Russia and addresses the fundamental question of how the 300-year Romanov reign shaped the country. In a captivating and entertaining way, the film also explores the origins of today's balance of power. The legacy of the Tsars is still clearly felt in modern Russia—and not just in the imposing buildings erected by the Romanovs. Anyone observing current Russian politics will find many parallels with bygone eras. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This channel is dedicated to the royal houses, noble families, and great dynasties that have shaped the history of Europe and the world.
