Why most tie the Elk Hair Caddis WRONG!

The Elk Hair Caddis is one of the most popular dry flies ever created. You cannot step foot in a fly shop anywhere without some of these to buy. In fact, even at big box stores who sell fishing equipment, seem to have little packages of flies, and you will always see an Adams, and Elk Hair Caddis. This is because they are extremely easy and inexpensive to tie. Also they are very effective. They mostly mimic caddis, but add a couple rubber legs on them, and you got yourself a mini hopper pattern, making it quite versatile. There have been so many variations of this simple pattern that I wouldn't dare even start to name them all. It is one of the most copied flies to make variations from and for good reason. Traditionally elk was used, however many EHC you find in shops these days are tied with deer hair, and for good reason. The deer hair is a bit finer, which gives a better look, and is easier to work with. It's easier to find deer hair swatches in fly shops as well, making it a more common material to use. And deer hair I find comes in more colors, allowing you to get super creative on how to tie these flies. I never leave for a trout stream without a couple of these in my box, incase there is some kind of hatch going on. They can represent other bugs, but of course represent a caddis the most. During October and November, most places in the US have big October caddis hatches, so I insure I fill my box with lots of these little flies in orange. However, throughout the year, you do happen across a few smaller hatches going on. Meaning I never leave for a trout stream without a few in my box.
