Los Escandón: La Familia que Construyó un Imperio Azucarero en Morelos y la Revolución Borró

The Escandón Family: The Family That Built a Sugar Empire in Morelos and Was Erased by the Revolution The governor of Morelos was also the state's largest landowner. Pablo Escandón y Barrón controlled the Atlihuayán and Xochimancas haciendas, two of the most powerful sugar mills in the country, while using the state apparatus to seize communal lands that did not belong to him. Thousands of workers lived bound by a system of debt peonage inherited from parents to children. But one particularly egregious act of dispossession—a fence erected in 1903 on land belonging to the villages of Yautepec—awakened a man who had been born just a few kilometers from those haciendas. What had taken three generations to build vanished in a matter of months when the dispossessed villages decided they would no longer tolerate it. It describes labor practices, including debt peonage, that operated within the legal framework of the time. It does not seek to defame individuals, families, or institutions. Historical complexity is respected: no moral judgments are made about past individuals based on present-day values. 💬 Did you know this story?
