"I can't accept this gift": Heiltsuk Nation reject Vancouver police's apology
Demands for accountability are growing after two Vancouver police officers failed to attend an apology ceremony in Heiltsuk Nation in British Columbia. The ceremony was part of a settlement agreement after Maxwell Johnson, an Indigenous man, and his granddaughter Torianne were wrongfully arrested at a bank in December 2019. "This behaviour demonstrates a further lack of respect for Indigenous cultural traditions, which was very disheartening considering the constables are supposed to be immersing themselves in cultural competency training," Heilstsuk Elected Chief Marilyn Slett said. "It also raises larger questions about systemic racism in policing." Neetu Garcha looks at how the community rejected the police department's gifts, and the response from Chief Const. Adam Palmer.
