"It Goes All The Way Back." — Elvis and Duane Allman In A Side Room At FAME Studios
In November 1969, Elvis Presley was recording at FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. During a break, he heard guitar from a side room and walked toward it. Inside: a twenty-two-year-old session musician named Duane Allman, playing alone with his eyes closed. Elvis stood in the doorway for five minutes, then asked if he could hear more. Duane played for twenty minutes. FAME Studios founder Rick Hall was in the doorway behind Elvis, watching. He described what changed in Elvis's playing for the rest of that session — and the phone call Elvis made after Duane Allman died two years later. 🎵 Chapters: 00:00 – November 1969: The Side Room 02:30 – Duane Allman At 22: The Best Guitar Player Nobody Knew 05:00 – Elvis Walks Toward The Sound 07:30 – Twenty Minutes Of Listening 10:30 – "It Goes All The Way Back" 13:00 – What Changed In Elvis's Playing 15:30 – The Phone Call After Duane Died Subscribe for more untold stories from music history every week.
