HIV guardiamo oltre, invecchiare con il virus dell'AIDS.

Over the years, the battle against HIV/AIDS has undergone a remarkable transformation, moving from a death sentence to a manageable condition, thanks to medical advances and growing social awareness. Since the 1980s, when the Centers for Infectious Disease Control in Atlanta reported an increase in cases of pneumonia and Kaposi's sarcoma among young gay men, HIV has captured global attention. Initially perceived as a disease primarily affecting the gay community, with the term GRID (Gay-Related Immune Deficiency) coined by the press, HIV became a broader reality with Magic Johnson's statement in 1991, demonstrating that it could affect anyone. 1996 marked a turning point with the introduction of HAART (Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy), transforming AIDS from a deadly disease to a curable one. Today, with approximately 35 million people living with HIV globally, the focus has shifted to aging with the virus. This shift in perspective has led to campaigns like "HIV: Looking Beyond," aimed not only at raising awareness of the disease but also at promoting a multidisciplinary approach that considers aging and associated comorbidities. Despite progress, significant challenges remain, such as the high number of people who are unaware of their infection. Lack of awareness impedes the adoption of effective preventive and therapeutic measures. Social perception of HIV/AIDS has improved over the years. Once seen as a disease of plague victims, it is now accepted as just another medical condition. However, significant differences in disease management between men and women remain, due to biological and social differences. Women, in particular, face greater challenges due to greater vulnerability to infection and the associated stigma, which often leads them to hide their condition and neglect their health. The "HIV: Looking Beyond" campaign, sponsored by the Italian Society of Infectious and Tropical Diseases, aims not only to raise awareness among patients already living with HIV but also to promote a cultural shift in society and the medical field. Specialists, including infectious disease specialists, cardiologists, nephrologists, and endocrinologists, are encouraged to increase their awareness of the specific issues facing people with HIV. In Italy, the state response to HIV is considered one of the best in the world, offering free chronic therapies and screenings to all HIV-positive patients. This approach to healthcare is a significant benefit for those living with the virus in the country. The campaign also targets young people, promoting awareness and prevention.
