Amarante : l'histoire fascinante de la Saint-Valentin portugaise

We left Porto and the coast to head back inland. Our first stop was Amarante, on the banks of the Támega River, a town less well-known than others, but undoubtedly a must-see if you're visiting northern Portugal. We crossed the Támega River via the San Gonzalo Bridge to enter the historic center, where the Monastery of San Gonzalo stands out, housing the tomb of the man known as the Portuguese Saint Valentine. But Amarante is also famous for its pastries, including a uniquely shaped treat linked to the legend of San Gonzalo. Next, we headed to Lamego, overlooked by the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Remedies, which is reached by a beautifully decorated staircase. Once at the top, you're rewarded with a breathtaking panoramic view of the town, crisscrossed by routes leading to Santiago de Compostela. We descend back to Lamego, where we can visit the cathedral or enter the citadel dominated by the castle.
