Today we'll read 2 Kings Chapter 7 During the reign of Joram, a severe famine struck the Northern Kingdom of Israel. Joram was despairing over the plight of his country and became very negative, almost to the point of giving up... But God did not abandon Israel. He once again showed mercy and grace through the prophet Elisha, bringing hope to Israel. When we read later, we invite you to focus on how God solved Israel's famine problem. Let us read together 2 Kings chapter 7: 1 Elisha said to them, “Hear the word of the Lord. This is what the Lord says: Tomorrow at about this time, at the gate of Samaria, a shekel of fine flour will be sold for one shekel, and two shekels of barley for one shekel.” 2 One of the officers who was supporting the king answered the man of God, “Behold, even if the Lord opened the windows of heaven, it could not be so.” Elisha said to them, “Behold, you will see with your own eyes that there will be nothing to eat.” 3 At the city gate were four lepers. They said to one another, “Why do we sit here and wait to die? 4 If we say we will go into the city, there is famine there, and we will die there. If we sit here and do not move, we will also die. Now, let us go and surrender to the army of the Arameans. If they spare our lives, we will live; if they kill us, we will die.” 5 At twilight, they got up and went to the Aramean camp. When they reached the camp, they saw that there was no one there. 6 For the Lord caused the Aramean army to hear the sound of chariots and horses, the sound of a great army, and they said to one another, “Look! The king of Israel has hired the kings of the Hittites and the kings of Egypt to attack us!” 7 So at dusk they rose and fled, abandoning their tents, their horses and their donkeys, leaving their camp where it was, and fleeing for their lives. 8 When the lepers reached the edge of the camp, they went into one of the tents, ate and drank, and took gold, silver, and clothing from it and hid them away. They returned and went into another tent, and took more valuables from it and hid them away. 9 Then they said to one another, “We have done wrong! This is a day of good news, and we have kept silent! If we had waited until daybreak, we would have sinned. Now let us go and announce this to the king!” 10 So they went and called to the gatekeepers, and told them, “We have come to the Aramean camp, and behold, there is no one there, no sound of human voices, only the tethered horses and donkeys, and the tents are all left where they were.” 11 So the gatekeepers called out, and they announced this to the king inside the city. 12 The king rose at night and said to his servants, “I have told you what the Arameans have done to us. They knew we were hungry, so they left their camp and lay in ambush in the fields, saying, ‘When the Israelites come out of the city, we will capture them alive, and then we can enter the city.’” 13 One of the king’s servants answered, “Let some men take five horses from the remaining ones in the city. Behold, these horses are as easily destroyed as the entire Israelite population. Let us send men to spy on them!” 14 So they took two chariots and horses, and the king sent men to follow the Aramean army, saying, “Go and spy on them.” 15 They followed the Arameans as far as the Jordan River. Behold, the entire road was littered with the clothes and tools the Arameans had abandoned in their hasty flight. The messengers returned and reported to the king. 16 The people went out and plundered the Aramean camp. So a shekel of fine flour was sold for a shekel, and two shekels of barley for a shekel, just as the Lord had said. 17 The king sent the officer who had supported him to direct the procession at the city gate, but the people trampled him to death there, just as the man of God had told the king when he came down to him. 18 The man of God had said to the king, “Around this time tomorrow, at the gate of Samaria, two shekels of barley will be sold for a shekel, and one shekel of fine flour for a shekel.” 19 The officer answered the man of God, “Behold, even if the Lord opened the windows of heaven, it could not be so.” But the man of God said, “Behold, you will see with your own eyes that there will be nothing to eat.” 20 And so it was fulfilled for him, for the people trampled him to death at the city gate.
