As the story goes, Paul Stanley wrote the song to give to Rod Stewart, but Peter Criss (The Silver-nosed Tomcat) demanded to sing it. It's been said that while Paul may have written the song with Stewart in mind, he actually wrote it as a way to throw a bone to the too often song-slighted and unhappy Peter Criss. When laying down the vocal tracks, Peter said Paul showed up to make sure it was recorded to his specifications. Though not as popular as Peter's Beth, Hard Luck Woman was a great follow-up to showcase Peter's raspy vocals and his sentimental side. Hard Luck Woman received modest airplay while charting at 26 on Billboard, then again at 67 eighteen years later when it was covered by long time KISS fan, Garth Brooks.
