How to Break Up Dialogue and Action in a Story or Novel
How do I break up dialogue and action in a short story or novel? Where do the paragraph breaks go? Can the action and dialogue go within the same paragraph? These are common questions among fiction writers, especially those who are new to the craft. And we're going to tackle them head-on in this video! Timestamps for this video ----------------------------------------- 0:00 Introduction 0:34 About the writing sample used here 2:19 Action and dialogue in the same paragraph (example #1) 3:23 How to avoid confusing the reader 6:40 Action and dialogue in separate paragraphs 7:21 Amazon / iPhone scam interrupts my recording, LOL 9:40 Action and dialogue in the same paragraph (example #2) 10:59 Summary of the basic rules 12:23 How to insert description and setting into the scene The takeaway: Action and dialogue can occur within the same paragraph, if it's the same person doing the speaking and acting. But whenever the speaker or actor changes, you need a new paragraph. Always use a new paragraph to indicate a new speaker, and to separate the actions of a different character from the one who just spoke. Setting and description should be on its own paragraph, separate from dialogue. Look for examples of this in your favorite book! ----------------------------- About the Author ----------------------------- I'm an independent novelist specializing in science fiction, horror and thrillers.
