AVENIDA SÃO JOÃO: Caminhe Comigo do Início até o Fim (MINHOCÃO)

#avenidasaojoao #saopaulo #minhocao Avenida São João is one of the most symbolic avenues in the city of São Paulo, in southeastern Brazil. In this video, I take a walk from the beginning of the avenue, near the Martinelli Building, to the final stretch, already under the Presidente João Goulart Elevated Highway, better known as MINHOCÃO. It is nothing more than a huge viaduct, almost 3.5 kilometers long, that covers the last 600 meters of Avenida São João. Thus, there is a highway above another highway, something unusual in Brazil, but which has existed for 55 years in the largest Brazilian city: São Paulo. During the tour, I recount the origin and transformations of Avenida São João: its importance as a connecting axis of the city center, the cinemas, hotels, historical buildings, commerce, and the era when this region was one of the great meeting points of São Paulo life, to the point that the intersection of a section of it with another avenue – Avenida Ipiranga – even became a landmark in the history of Brazilian Popular Music, in the song SAMPA, by Caetano Veloso. In the section near the Minhocão elevated highway, it's possible to perceive a profound transformation in the urban landscape: less pedestrian traffic, weaker commerce, and an urban environment very different from that which marked São João's past and enchanted the artist Caetano Veloso. More than just showing a famous avenue, this is a journey through the urban memory of São Paulo: an attempt to understand how one of the city's most important thoroughfares has changed over the decades and what these transformations reveal about São Paulo's own history.
