7 Highest-Paying Engineering Careers (Not Software)
Engineering careers paying over one hundred thirty thousand dollars without coding. Seven non-software paths from Bureau of Labor Statistics. Most students hear engineering and immediately think software. The BLS May 2024 data tells a completely different story. Three of the seven engineering careers in this video clear well above the median software developer, and the lowest-paying career on the list is also the fastest-growing in the entire engineering universe. Every career here is bachelor's-entry, hardware-or-infrastructure focused, and structurally resistant to AI displacement because of legal liability, physical presence, or human judgment requirements that no model can substitute. Career breakdowns in this video: Aerospace Engineers (SOC 17-2011): median pay around one hundred thirty four thousand, plus six percent growth through 2034. Designs aircraft, spacecraft, hypersonic vehicles. Defense-clearance moat. Electronics Engineers Except Computer (SOC 17-2072): around one hundred twenty seven thousand, plus seven percent growth. Chips, power systems, radar, medical imaging. Electrical Engineers (SOC 17-2071): around one hundred eleven thousand, plus seven percent growth. Power grids, substations, building electrical infrastructure. Mechanical Engineers (SOC 17-2141): around one hundred two thousand, plus nine percent growth. Engines, drivetrains, robotics, surgical tools. Civil Engineers (SOC 17-2051): around ninety nine thousand, plus seven percent growth. Bridges, water systems, federal infrastructure work. Industrial Engineers (SOC 17-2112): around ninety nine thousand, plus twelve percent growth. Factory and warehouse optimization, hospital throughput. Operations Research Analysts (SOC 15-2031): around ninety one thousand, plus twenty one percent growth. The math of decisions. Highest growth career on the list, lowest name recognition. The pattern across all seven: a structural moat AI cannot cross. Either a Professional Engineer stamp that carries personal legal liability, or hardware that requires hands-on debugging, or stakeholder framing that cannot be automated. Six of the seven also pay materially better with a master's degree or a P E license stacked on top of the bachelor's, so the long-term ceiling is significantly higher than the entry-level salary suggests. Action item for families: ask the student to pick the TWO careers from this list that interest them most, then read the first-year coursework page for one undergraduate program in each. Twenty minutes of reading. That step alone is a three-times multiplier on graduating with a major worth finishing, according to adolescent career-decision research. 💬 Rank these seven engineering careers one through seven for the engineer in your life.
