Understanding Our New World | Molly Worthen
Institute Director John Shaw spoke with historian Molly Worthen about her research into the powerful role of charisma in American history and politics. Worthen, a professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, discussed the ideas in her book Spellbound: How Charisma Shaped American History from the Puritans to Donald Trump, explaining that charisma is not simply personal charm but a dynamic relationship between leaders and followers. According to Worthen, charismatic leaders gain influence by offering compelling stories that help people make sense of chaos, injustice, or uncertainty and by giving followers a sense of purpose within a larger narrative. Worthen traced how charismatic leadership has appeared throughout American history, identifying several recurring types of leaders: from prophetic figures who challenge established authority to agitators and modern “gurus” who thrive in periods of institutional distrust. She noted that while charismatic leaders have long relied on emerging media, from print to radio to social media, to reach followers, the underlying impulses that drive people to seek charismatic figures have remained remarkably consistent. The discussion also compared contemporary political figures, highlighting how different styles of charisma can shape public perception and political action. The conversation also touched on Worthen’s academic background and teaching philosophy. A graduate of Yale University and participant in its influential Grand Strategy program, she emphasized the importance of deep reading and focused learning in an era of digital distraction. Worthen argued that while charisma can be a powerful force in politics and culture, it should not be confused with effective statesmanship, which depends on competence, institutional respect, and a commitment to the rule of law. Together, she and Shaw explored how understanding the history of charismatic leadership can shed light on the dynamics shaping American public life today.
