Why Jesus Said It Was Better for Him to Leave—What the Holy Spirit Would Do Next

Jesus saying, “It is to your advantage that I go away,” sounded impossible to disciples whose lives had been rebuilt around His visible presence. Yet in John 16, Jesus explains that His departure would not mean abandonment. His death, resurrection, ascension, and glorification would prepare the way for the promised Holy Spirit to dwell within God’s people, glorify Christ, and empower their witness. The Holy Spirit was already active throughout the Old Testament. He moved in creation, empowered leaders and craftsmen, strengthened judges, and spoke through prophets. But Moses, Ezekiel, and Joel pointed toward a greater outpouring: God’s Spirit placed within His people, giving new hearts and extending His presence beyond one leader, office, or generation. Jesus places Himself at the center of that promise. The Counselor would teach the apostles, remind them of Jesus’ words, guide them into the truth about His completed work, and expose the world’s false judgment of Him. The Spirit would not replace Jesus or become a competing center of attention. As Jesus says, “He will glorify Me.” Pentecost reveals why Jesus’ departure was truly an advantage. The exalted Christ poured out the Spirit, frightened disciples became courageous witnesses, the gospel crossed language barriers, and thousands heard that the crucified Jesus had been raised and exalted. The signs pointed beyond themselves to the risen Lord, and the Spirit began forming believers into a people devoted to truth, fellowship, prayer, and shared life. 📖 KEY VERSE John 16:7 — “Nevertheless I tell you the truth: It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I don’t go away, the Counselor won’t come to you.
