PACTO DE LA OPOSICIÓN CON LOS SINDICATOS

This week, the National Liberation Party, the Broad Front, and the Citizen Agenda Coalition signed the so-called Costa Rican Patriotic Pact with the National Network of Social Sectors. The agreement is presented as an alliance between opposition parties and various social sectors. However, upon examining who leads and negotiates directly with the legislative factions, it becomes clear that the leadership is in the hands of the traditional public sector union bloc. There is nothing wrong or illegitimate about that. Unions have every right to organize, defend their interests, and seek political influence. But the discussion does have political relevance. More than a simple opposition alliance, this appears to be an agreement centered around a particular vision of the State: its institutions, its size, and how they intend to respond to proposals for reform, public spending management, or economic liberalization. In politics, signatures are never neutral.
