I Could Have Disappeared. I Ended Up at the Oscars: Nikki Lilly

In this episode of What’s Underneath, content creator, speaker, and disability advocate Nikki Lilly ‪@nikkililly‬ reflects on growing up in the public eye with a life-threatening vascular condition and a visible facial difference. At 6 years old, Nikki’s life took a drastic turn, sending her from playgrounds and school to being bedridden and in hospitals. After her condition forced her to suddenly uproot her childhood, she began using social media as a form of self-expression. Through her magnetic realness, her following grew, carving out a space of her own on the internet. Since then, from the Oscars to online platforms, Nikki has spent much of her life navigating highly visible spaces while living with extreme medical uncertainty. Her story reveals the power of showing up as yourself and choosing to be seen, even when you don’t fit in, and the importance of learning to meet yourself with compassion when so much else is out of your control.
