At the end of the 19th century, the Muslim world faced the question: how to continue living? The ascendancy of Christian Europeans on the global political stage and their hegemony placed Muslim leaders and public figures in a difficult position and forced them to consider possible interactions with European culture and science. Some considered their Muslim heritage obsolete, while others, on the contrary, embraced the ummah of the early decades of Islam as a model for society. The Ismailis, who had for centuries been tainted by the notoriety of assassins, chose a "middle path": remaining true to the principles that formed the foundation of their religious and philosophical teachings, they made efforts to transform their community in a way that would embrace the best of Western civilization. Today, the Aga Khan Ismaili Fund for Development includes numerous projects for the preservation of cultural heritage and the development of initiatives, as well as several universities, numerous schools, hospitals, and laboratories. At our meeting, we will discuss how the Ismailis manage to preserve their identity and successfully pursue a multi-vector social policy.
