Ferguson, 2025) V1. D A Farewell, ye dungeons dark and strong. D Bm Farewell, farewell to thee. D A Macpherson’s life will not be long D G A upon yon gallows tree. Chorus: D A So rantingly, so wantonly D Bm and so dauntingly went he. D A He played a tune then he danced it around D G A below the gallows tree. V2. There’s some come here to see me hanged and some to buy my fiddle. But before that I do part with her I'll brake her through the middle. V3. He took his fiddle in both his hands and he broke it over a stone. Saying, “No other hand shall play on thee when I am dead and gone.” V4 Take off these bands from off my hands, and give to me my sword. There's not a man in all Scotland but I'll brave him at his word. V5. The reprieve was coming o’er the Brig o’ Banff for to set MacPherson free, but they put the clock a quarter before and hanged him from the tree.
