PRUEBAS NACIONALES DE LENGUA ESPAÑOLA R. D.
National Spanish Language Tests The National Spanish Language Tests, administered by the Ministry of Education of the Dominican Republic (MINERD), are standardized assessments with a diagnostic purpose. This means they are no longer a graduation requirement, but rather a tool to measure the quality and competencies of the national education system. Main Focus: Communicative Competence The central focus of the test is not the memorization of isolated grammatical rules, but rather the demonstration of the student's communicative competence. In practice, this translates into a test strongly oriented toward reading comprehension. The student must read various types of texts and answer questions that demonstrate their ability to understand, analyze, and interpret them at different levels of depth. Test Structure and Format Format: Multiple Choice. The student receives a booklet with the texts and questions, and a separate answer sheet to fill in the correct option. Structure: The test is organized around several texts (generally between 3 and 5) of different genres and types. All questions are linked to the reading and analysis of these texts. Key Competencies and Content to be Assessed The content is assessed in an integrated manner, applying linguistic and literary theory to the analysis of the presented texts. The competencies are grouped into: 1. Reading Comprehension (Literal, Inferential, and Critical Levels) This is the most important competency. Students are expected to be able to: Identify the type of text: Narrative (short story, fable), descriptive, expository (popular science article), argumentative (editorial, essay), or poetic. Extract explicit information: Locate data, names, dates, and facts directly mentioned in the text (literal level). Making inferences: Deducing information that is not explicitly stated, such as a character's motivations, the cause and effect of actions, or the meaning of a phrase within its context (inferential level). Identifying the author's purpose: Determining whether the text aims to inform, persuade, entertain, or criticize. Distinguishing between facts and opinions. Understanding the meaning of words and expressions from context. Analyzing text structure: Recognizing the introduction, body, and conclusion in expository texts or the structure of a poem (verses, stanzas). 2. Linguistic and Textual Analysis Applying knowledge of grammar and spelling to understand how language functions within a text. Morphosyntax: Recognizing the function of grammatical categories (nouns, adjectives, verbs, connectives) in constructing meaning. For example, how adjectives describe a character or how an adversative conjunction (such as "but" or "however") changes the direction of an argument. Logical Conjunctions: Identify the type of relationship that conjunctions establish (cause, consequence, addition, opposition). Verb Tenses: Understand the value and use of different verb tenses in narration or exposition. Spelling and Punctuation: Recognize the correct use of accentuation and punctuation marks as elements that give meaning to the text. 3. Literary Analysis This focuses on literary texts (short stories, novel excerpts, poems) to assess the ability to: Identify elements of narration: Narrator (first or third person), characters (main, secondary), setting (space and time). Recognize literary devices: Identify and explain the meaning of figures of speech such as metaphor, simile, hyperbole, and personification. Analyze the poetic structure: Verse meter, synalepha, rhyme scheme (assonance, consonance), and stanza form (quatrain, sonnet, etc.). Bibliography and Key References For adequate preparation, it is essential to consult official documents and become familiar with the representative authors and works of the Dominican and Latin American canon. Official Documents of the Ministry of Education (MINERD) Reference Framework for the National Examinations of the Second Cycle of Secondary Education: This is the foundational document that describes in detail the approach, competencies, and content to be assessed. Secondary Level Curriculum Design: This specifies the content and competencies to be developed during the years of study. National Examination Familiarization Booklets: The Ministry of Education publishes booklets each year with sample items and model tests. These are the most important practice resource. They can be found on the official portal of the Ministry of Education (www.ministeriodeeducacion.gob.do) or on the Educando educational portal (www.educando.edu.do).
