In Day-12 of our GCP Zero to Hero series, we dive deep into the Google Artifact Registry. Learn how to set up Google Artifact Registry end-to-end and securely push your first Docker image from a Compute Engine VM. From Cloud Shell, we create a private AR repo, a least-privilege service account, and a VM attached to that identity. We then SSH into the VM, install Docker and the gcloud credential helper, and build a tiny Nginx “hello world” image. Next, we tag and push to AR using IAM-based auth, and verify access with repo-scoped permissions—no key files required. Finally, we cover best practices like promoting by digest, cleanup/retention policies, and tips to avoid surprise egress costs.
