In this "reflection in a big cup," we don't seek who is right and who is wrong, but rather seek the profound meaning of our gestures. Did you know that for the first thousand years, standing was the universal norm? The Council of Nicaea in 325 even went so far as to prohibit kneeling on Sundays, because it is the day of the Resurrection and Christians must be "upright" with Christ. So why do many today prefer to kneel? We'll journey through the Middle Ages, amidst knights and theological disputes (like that of Berengar of Tours), to understand how the desire to adore the "Real Presence" has changed our way of approaching the Eucharist. We'll also discuss today's rules (the famous General Instruction of the Roman Missal §160), which calls for unity, but respects the freedom of those who wish to kneel out of love. Because, ultimately, if the gesture doesn't become a true encounter with the Risen One, it risks remaining merely an empty form.
