Peyton Hall's Roll-Through Scramble | Technique Tuesday

On this week's Technique Tuesday, three-time All-American and the winningest wrestler in West Virginia history Peyton Hall breaks down one of his most effective roll-through scrambles — built on the idea that a scramble isn't a chaotic 50/50, it's a position you can win from on purpose. Peyton built his whole reputation on relentless scrambling, and this is a higher-level move that works in both folkstyle and freestyle. It isn't a beginner technique, but put the time in and it becomes a real weapon. It starts the same way every time: knee deep, anchor with a tight waist, then swing your knee up and cover his head with your hips. From there you go elbow deep behind the bend of his leg, lock your hands, squeeze and roll — and the detail that decides everything is shifting your shoulders as you roll so you come out off to the side and on top, never underneath him. Keep your knee under (let the leg go straight and his head pops right out), post, and step over to your church. And when your partner reacts by letting go of your leg, you take weight to his head, capture and "shelf" the leg, and shelf the opposite leg to whatever side he rolls — keeping him pinned on his back. Scrambling isn't chaos. It's a position you can win from — on purpose. You'll learn: The setup that makes the whole roll work — knee deep, anchor with a tight waist, then swing your knee up and cover his head with your hips Going elbow deep behind the bend of his leg and locking your hands to load the roll The detail that decides the position — shift your shoulders as you roll so you come out off to the side and on top, not trapped underneath Why your knee stays under — let that leg straighten and his head pops out and he turns down on you The reaction finish — when he lets go of your leg, take weight to his head, capture the leg, and shelf the opposite leg to whichever way he rolls to keep him on his back Great scramblers aren't lucky — they're deliberate. This is how Peyton turns the scramble into points.
