Not only aquarium plants, but also aquarium fish can begin to experience discomfort and even poisoning, which can be identified by the appearance of certain external signs or symptoms: plants stop growing, die, wither, spots or stains appear on leaves that develop into holes, leaves turn yellow, die, fall off, and dissolve. Lighting also plays a crucial role in the health of plants in an aquarium. Therefore, lighting can confidently be called the number one topic in aquarium keeping, as all other aquarium parameters, such as fertilization, CO2 supply, and others, are adjusted to lighting. For feeding (supplemental nutrition), aquarium plant fertilizers are used, including: macrofertilizers, microfertilizers, macronutrients, micronutrients, nitrate, phosphate, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, iron, calcium, and magnesium. Using high-quality aquarium plant fertilizers will protect your aquarium from numerous problems and yourself from the hassle of solving them. However, light is the key to plant growth and development in an aquarium. It provides plants with the energy to synthesize and absorb the nutrients they need for nutrition. Insufficient or dim lighting can cause plants to lose color, stunt growth, and sometimes even stop growing altogether. Therefore, an aquarium should have sufficient, but not excessive, light. Excessive lighting can cause algae to appear in the aquarium, including Xenococcus, diatoms, brown algae, black beard algae, Vietnamese algae, green beard algae, staghorn algae, thread algae, spirogyra, chlorella, euglena, cladophora, green dust, blue-green algae, oedogonium, green fluff, rhizoclonium, and others. If this occurs, the plant needs to be treated, disinfected, and sanitized. Algodez, baktodez, algaecide, aquacrystal from AQUABIOS, hydrogen peroxide, sydex, and other products are used for this purpose. Also, with strong light, the walls and glass of the aquarium quickly become overgrown, and the substrate, driftwood, rocks, and other decorations become coated with a green film that is very difficult to remove. Often, with excessive lighting, the water in an aquarium begins to bloom, turning green and cloudy. Removing algae is quite difficult, and can take days or even weeks. Even the methods used aren't always effective, and in some cases, it's necessary to use aquarium chemicals or completely reset the aquarium. The spectrum (temperature) of the lamps used also plays a significant role for aquarium plants. This is especially true for red plants, because if the light output isn't rich enough in the red spectrum, these plants won't be able to develop vibrant colors. Furthermore, light affects the visual perception of the aquarium and everything in it. With the right lighting, aquarium fish and plants appear brighter, their colors become more saturated, and fish such as Neon Tetras, Rasboras, Danios, Guppies, Swordtails, Mollies, Platies, and Angelfish literally begin to glow.
