This is a Rolex Explorer II "Polar" 216570 watch video review. I’m back today to talk about another interesting Rolex sports watch, the reference 216570 Explorer II. The Explorer II should be called the Cave-Dweller because legend has it that it was developed especially for cave explorers so they would be able to tell night from the day while underground. But alas, this watch is frequently referred to as the Rolex Polar. Another common nickname of the newest version of the Explorer II is Orange Hand – for obvious reasons. That big orange GMT hand is different than the GMT hand found on the GMT-Masters. Bezel Let’s talk about the bezel first. It serves as the hour chapter ring for the GMT hand. It’s marked with digits every two hours on the even hours. Odd hours are marked by a small inverted triangle. The bezel is stationary and by adjusting the 12 and 24-hour hands appropriately, it can serve as a second-time-zone. Case The 42 millimeter Oyster case is a slightly trimmed down version of the modern super case featured on many current Rolex sports models. The material is Oyster steel; a steel in the 904L family of stainless steels. With its standard screw-down crown and case back, The Explorer II’s case is water resistant to a depth of 100 meters. Bracelet The bracelet is the easily recognizable Rolex Oyster bracelet, equipped with an Oysterlock folding clasp and the Easylink comfort extension link which allows you to expand the bracelet up to 5 millimeters without adding a link. All links are brushed stainless steel. That keeps the Explorer II looking casual. Dial The Explorer II is available with either a white or black dial. Both, of course, feature a date function and on the black dial version, you’ll find hour markers in 18K white gold which match the white gold hands. The white dial carries black-rimmed hour markers and black hands. These combinations give the dial incredible contrast, especially the white dial version. Worth noting, the hands on the Explorer II are pudgier than those on the rest of the Rolex sports watch lineup. This really increases readability, and it really pops on the white dialed version. Lume The hour markers and hands are illuminated with Rolex’s proprietary bright blue Chromalight. This makes the watch as easy to read in the dark as it is in daylight, much easier than the older green-glowing Superluminova. Movement / Technical Info The beating heart of the Explorer II is the Rolex caliber 3187. The 3187 is a sibling of the GMT-Master’s 3186 and like it’s sibling, features a Parachrom hairspring which makes the Explorer II highly resistant to magnetic fields and miscellaneous shocks And remember, Rolex GMT movements are unique. Instead of the GMT hand jumping, the hour hand jumps when the crown is turned while in position two. Conclusions Whether you choose the black dial or the white, you’ll be wearing a watch with a rich heritage of exploration. The Explorer II is an eye-catcher, but it’s not as instantly recognizable as many in the Rolex lineup. And the second time zone makes it a great travel watch. And remember!
